Time Clock Piece or One Year Performance 1980–1981 is a durational performance. For one year, Hsieh punched timecards once per hour, every hour, on the hour. The performance was documented with a 16mm film camera, positioned in front of Hsieh, producing 24 stills per day and the total of 8760 stills. The stills were then compressed into a 6-minute silent time-lapse film, flashing 24 frames per second. The durational aesthetic reveals a relationship between the culturally constructed ‘clock time’ and the ‘duration’ of lived time. The documentation of Time Clock Piece is indexical to the performance.
