Plugin Beachball Success forms part of Jon Satrom’s ‘prepared desktop’ series of real-time performances, which refer to John Cage’s ‘prepared piano’ pieces where Cage inserted screws, nuts, bolts, and objects between the strings of a piano to create nonpiano sounds. Plugin Beachball Success is an ‘interrupt’ developed for transmediale 2k+12. The interruption happened during the festival introduction, when Gansing was about to do a slideshow of images. Satrom’s laptop screen locked on him and so did the presentation. Satrom jumped up to resolve the situation, which evolved/devolved into the performance. The beginning of the performance was designed as a troubleshooting phase. This was followed by downloading, installing, executing, and improvising with assets, packages, and programmes.
