The four compositions that form part of Volume and Void – Heap, Wreck, Blur, and Stash – were composed with experimental scheduling algorithms. The algorithms were used to explore the duality – juxtaposition and interpenetration – of immediate, direct events, and gradual processes that evolve over time. Both the system and the sound recordings were created during the summer of 2020 in Scheveningen, The Hague, Netherlands.
